Manages to cover some new ideas but Johnson still doesn’t seem to be able to capture lightning in a bottle like he did with the first 2019 entry. Wake Up Dead Man has some really strong themes about small town life, religious demagogues, and the deep seeded alienation of our time. It has some weaker threads too, between the mystery novels, religious platitudes and a ‘Road to Damascus’ moment thing start to get a bit muddled. I agree with another commentator, this is so star studded it begins to resemble a Wes Anderson film with the rapidity of putting famous faces on the screen for just a few sequences. Still, Brolin and O’Connor deliver such a captivating performance in the first third, I almost wish this wasn’t a Daniel Craig whodunnit.
