Can a bottle episode be sprawling? Tarantino seems to think so. This has everything you could ask for from a QT picture, the non-linear story telling, the truly disgusting violence, and racial conflict to boot. As a period piece it’s certainly interesting, 1870 is a strange year to try and make sense of and I’m not sure how this fared. The war is omnipresent but receded enough into memory that Johny Reb has moved on to other distractions now. Initially I thought this must be the 1890s or 80s but I think in order to make the character of General Sanford work the movie needed to be set in the direct aftermath of the war. There’s probably more to be said about the War in historical memory that is portrayed in this movie, but I was too focused on the ‘who dunnit’ arc of the story. Overall, very enjoyable, equally as good as Django.
