Rewatch: 4/5

Actually better than I remember my theater experience… not having consumed 3 hours of Oppenheimer and several mimosas before probably helped. This movie is un-apologetically weird I kind of love it: the lack of internal logic of Barbie land is very fun. Time to sing ‘I’m just Ken’ to myself for another week.

Perhaps not just Gerwig’s ‘Lego Movie’ as many have panned this to be, but it doesn’t quite embrace its own wacky rules to create a pink and sparkly spectacle. Gosling seriously gave the best performance of his life in this but there were several pieces I thought could have been perused further. Will Ferrel was the stand out star of the derided ‘Lego Movie’ in my opinion and his talents and the role of the all-male Mattel board don’t quite have a solid resolution in the third act. I think an even bolder approach could have yielded something better. Still a very competent movie with a few surprises.
