Good but not great, the tent-pole WW1-centenary film in the west has yet to be made. Visually this is a feast, and if you collect physical media the 4k Bluray is absolutely stunning. The No-Mans-Land and night time artillery raid sequences absolutely capture the eerie and terrifying nature of industrialist warfare. The two protagonists are fine but hard to make much of a connection to as they push through the war torn wasteland. In the end this movie wants to tell a story about the dangers of idealism, senseless violence of the war and dedication to the lives of your fellow soldiers. It at times accomplishes these, but a lackluster final sequence and some jarring cuts leave me wanting more. Still much better than Netflix’s ‘All Quiet’.
