Very enjoyable, the first piece of pop history I’ve read in a while and a very good piece of pop history at that. It is a compelling look at one of the darkest hours of American History, and the Klan’s grip on the once proud bastion of Union power in the mid-west is a humbling tragedy to behold. I think I would have liked some more connective tissue to the red summer of 1919 and the general conservative turn of the United States in this period, but for the length of the book Egan did a good job. I think I’ll be rec’ing this one to friends!
