A very comprehensive telling of the Russian Revolution. While I may not always agree with Figes, I do respect his style. A self inflicted tragedy is perhaps the most charitable evaluation Figes is capable of giving and I do think it works generally as his thesis. I appreciate his use of counter factuals – they are difficult to deploy well when writing history but give this book some needed color.
