This book is great, and probably the best explanation of the lead up to the Civil War that I have read so far. The politicians of the 1840s and 50s are living breathing people in this text, not the faceless blocks that many other books make them out to be. You get a great sense for the character of the times, and the cracks that would shatter American institutions as we slept walked towards civil war.
